about Mibbit and the upcoming server upgrade

Update: the upgrade has been partially applied to the network, please use atlantis.austnet.org to preview the change before it is applied globally to the network. Mibbit have been kind enough to add AustNet to their networks list and forward all connections to atlantis.austnet.org, please ensure you select “AustNET” from the drop-down list when connecting via webchat.mibbit.com. It is still possible to connect to the other AustNet servers through mibbit, but please be aware the host changing will currently only apply if you use atlantis.austnet.org!

AustNet will shortly upgrade our server software to a new version. One major change is the inclusion of support for the web-based Mibbit IRC client. Clients connecting through Mibbit will now have their proper host set (and cloaked through virtual world), and trigger settings will now apply to Mibbit clients as if they had connected directly to the AustNet servers.

Please be aware this change may result in some one-off issues for mibbit users and channel administrators alike. These issues include:

  • Identifying to your nickname may not be possible due to a host mismatch. Mibbit clients who utilise the NickOP “USEHOSTLIST” security setting should ensure this setting is either temporarily disabled or ensure they have added their actual host/ip to NickOP so they will be recognised after the change.
  • Channel bans on *!*@*.mibbit.com will no longer stop clients using Mibbit from joining your channel. If you really want to ban Mibbit clients entirely, use *!mibbit@* after the change.
  • Channel bans on *!XXXXXXXX@*.mibbit.com will no longer stop Mibbit clients from base16 IP XXXXXXXX from joining your channel. If you really want to ban these clients (whether they use Mibbit or not), ban the base10 IP in the form *!*@NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN to convert base16 to base10 in mIRC, use //echo -a $longip($base(XXXXXXXX,16,10))
  • /ignore and /silence entries should also be reviewed

This change is intended to make connecting to AustNet through Mibbit a more transparent and secure experience. Should you require any assistance, please /join #asd when you are next online.
